What is your favorite piece of American art?
Any ideas? How does it relate to the history of America?
Hi! There are so many.. but I love this piece!
Grant Wood’s incredible painting of ‘The Midnight
Ride of Paul Revere.’ The bird’s-eye view makes the
setting look like a New England town in miniature.
Not only does it look like you could step right into
its gleaming precision and be part of this historical
event, it reminds me of that beautiful and historical
part of this country where I grew up. It depicts a
night-time messenger on horseback just before the
battles of Lexington and Concord. His famous “Midnight
Ride” occurred on the night of April 18/April 19, 1775,
when he and William Dawes were instructed by Dr.
Joseph Warren to ride from Boston to Lexington to warn
John Hancock and Samuel Adams of the movements of
the British Army, which was beginning the march from
Boston to Lexington. What a time in our country’s history!
And it reminds me of Longfellow’s poem:
‘Listen, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere…”
I have a print of this in our home, we think that it’s part of
“our” history, as well.
