What type of plaster do I need to use to make a cast of a child’s hand?
I want to make casts of my niece’s hands and then paint them and have them and have them fired at a local “Paint Your Own” craft store.
I called the store, and the woman I spoke to said she fired all of her pieces on a 6. I’m not familiar with Pottery Kilns and I don’t know what type of clay/plasters, can withstand being fired on a 6.
I want this to be a nice looking cast, not just your regular “Plaster-o-Paris” painted print.
I need to know what type of material to use.
I also welcome any other nifty ideas! Thanks!
This is close but not quite what you want
The first step is to mold the hand safely
There are kits available and there are some online videos.

The next step is to mold the plaster cast with some thing you can mold the clay with.
Personally I would stop with the plaster cast.
The kits have you mold the hand in alginate
I don’t think you can mold clay in an alginate mold.
You can mold wax in the alginate mold.
Use the wax cast for making a plaster mold to mold slip or liquid clay
This is a Multi step process but it can be done safely
But alginate is safer to the skin than making a mold with plaster.
You can then make a mold of the plaster cast
There are other methods that need to be supervised by an experienced artist. Ask the store for more advice.
EDIT: I urge you to first make a mold of your hand before you try to mold a child’s hands
