need help with Czechoslovakian violin. If anyone can translate or knows these Instruments ?
I recently acquired a vintage violin, that appears to be of very high quality, even in comparison to my daughters school violin. It has a label, that appears to be in Czech. The words, are Salaba Bretislav Vlastini Vyroba Smyccovych Nastro JU Odborny Kouslar
If anyone can translate all or even part of this label and help me track the origins of the instrument, I would be grateful.
Well, I´m Czech, so I think that I know what is written there. But you´ve got there some mistakes, some I can recognize, but some can´t.
Salaba – It´s last name
Bretislav – It´s first name and in Czech it´s written Břetislav
Vlastini – there is a mistake, it should be written “vlastní” and that means “his own” or “self”
Vyroba – výroba is in English “manufacture”
Smyccovych – in Czech “smyčcových” at it´s “bow” or “string”
Nastro JU – in Czech “nástrojů”, in English “instruments” so with the previous word it´s “string instruments”
Odborny – “odborný” in English “specialist”
Kouslar – this is a mistake which make me puzzled most… This isn´t a Czech word definetely, maybe there should be “houslař” and that is in English “violin-maker”
So the whole sentence (label) should be in English like this:
“Salaba Břetislav, self manufacture of string instruments, specialist violin-maker”
Břetislav Salaba was a Czech violin-maker, born in 12. 3. 1894 in czech town Semily and worked in Hradec Králové and Prague.
If you would have any other questions about a Czech language, feel free to ask me on my e-mail. Have a good day man
