When building a new interior non bearing wall, does the sole plate need to be one contiguous 2×4?
or can I use two pieces?
I have one piece for the top plate but my largest 2×4 is 1 foot short of 9 feet (the length of the wall). I am just trying to avoid another trip to the home depot if this is unnecessary.

Jim why would you use a double top plate in a non load bearing wall?
Yea it’s ok, just place the weaken end of the plate toward the wall. Can’t you find any piece of wood that would do, you could join it with a fish-plate or a lap joint. http://www.answers.com/topic/fishplate this fish-plate http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=lap+joint&meta=&aq=f&oq= wouldn’t need to be like the one on that site, rather just a piece of anything to hold the joint piece in line just nailed to the top.
